Always Destroy Your Hotel Key Card

Print tip

Ever wonder what is on the magnetic key card used to open your hotel room? The answer is, a whole lot more than the access code.

Information stored on the key card includes your name, your address, check in/check out date, your credit card number and its expiration date.

Talk about opportunities for identity theft - anyone can take that card and, with the help of a simple scanning device, transfer the details on to any run of the mill computer.

So, when you leave the hotel, always take your key card with you - destroy it as you would an old credit card, being especially sure to cut through the magnetic strip several times. And
never, ever leave your key card in your room or any waste bin.

An alternative to destroying it is to run a small magnet (admittedly, not exactly something most people carry around with them) several times over the magnetic strip at the back of the card - this erases all the information on it.
